Dear Fans (still 99 of you),
I’ve taken a week off from writing this week. Since submitting to a dozen agents two Fridays ago I needed a break from what has been an intense period. I have had 2 No’s so far from those agents. To be discussed another time, but I’m totally fine with that. I SAID I”M FINE (cries onto the keyboard).
This week we celebrated the 1st birthday of our little Dachshund ‘Barney Boy’. His first year has been an experience. He was re-homed when he was 6 months and we welcomed him in with open arms, chewy toys and bacon treats. Dachshunds are needy dogs and he’s been learning along the way.
I’m not here to tell you this week how cute my dog is because you can make your own judgement. One thing I do have to mention though is dog walkers. You rarely have an experience with another dog walker that isn’t an odd encounter.
You’ll see another dog walker and first thing you do is judge the walker on the breed of dog they have. Is it a big dog or small dog, on or off the lead, and basically… is it going to eat my dog.
Then there’s the weird ‘filler’ conversations you have. Don’t get me wrong I’ve actually had some really endearing encounters with dog walkers. There’s a lovely older gent I see every night about 10pm on the late night walk. He’s great. But then there’s just some walkers who can’t refrain from making a comment. Most of the time it’s all harmless, monotonous comments like ‘Getting colder isn’t it’ or ‘Good the rains stopped.’ You get used to these fillers and you start doing them yourself.
But this week, the day before Barney’s first birthday I took him to the local park for what was his 4th time off the lead in a public place with other dogs. I thought let’s improve his social skills. He loves chasing the other dogs no matter how big or small and you can see how happy he is.
We’d done a couple of laps of the park and then a smallish rough haired dog approached the back of Barney, mounted him and started humping him. Poor Barney didn’t know what had hit him, he only wanted to be friends. The owner slowly pulled his dog away and after ten seconds he mounted him again. It was nothing sexual. Just dominating. The owner then put his dog on the lead, and Barney, Toby (our other dog) and I went the other way around the park.
One more loop and we met our humpy friends once more. Barney a bit more reserved this time went down into submission position. Humpy McHumperson came over and mounted Barney once more. His owner pulled him away and said..
“Your turn to put your dog on the lead this time.” In front of three other female dog owners. Showed me right up at 8:37am on a Monday morning. Put my dog on the lead, cos your dogs humping mine? That doesn’t stand up in doggy court I’m afraid. Apart from that we’ve all had a great week.
Anyway, a blog with a different vibe this time.
Happy weekend all.
Spring time is weeks away and just around the corner.
Have a great weekend, and don’t hump anyone you shouldn’t. Or you’ll be put on the lead.
